The Little Angels of the Environment Cameroon code- named LANEC, under the auspices of the Ministry of Environment and Protection of Nature, carried out a series of beach clean up and tree plant campaign exercise around the kribi beaches from the 29-31 July 2010. The Campaign that was carried out under the banner « operation Join children in keeping our beaches clean, litter kills », witnessed the participation of about fifty children from the Northwest, Center, Littoral, and South Regions of Cameroon. The event which is aimed at educating children at an earlier stage on the importance of protecting our marine biodiversity is in line with the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity celebrations under the theme: `Biodiversity is life, Biodiversity is our life'.

The summer holiday programme with environment kids falls within the framework of the LANEC action plan, drawn as follow up to the pledges made by the children during the past TUNZA International Children's Conferences organized by UNEP and the Young Agenda 21 of Norway

Talking during the clean up and tree planting exercises, the delegate for the Ministry of Environment and Protection of Nature Mr Ondoa Valere, called on the participating children and youth to introduce these friendly Environmental habits in their respective schools and immediate environments. The delegate in his note of encouragement called on the kids to constantly organise such educative forums so as to educate other children as well as those just joining LANEC. He equally made it clear that these children should do what the older generation has been unable to take concrete action in saving our seas from litter.

The LANEC National Chair Mme Priscilla Song, equally appreciated the children in their different initiatives. She pointed out that those actively engaged in these activities will always be privileged when proposing candidates for selection and participation in children's Environmental Conferences and forums abroad. Talking on the importance of the activity she said there has been a difference and a greater awareness on beach litter since the last clean up in Kribi in 2008, she encouraged them to spread their ideas they uphold in their different schools, and clubs and thus follow up with clean and healthy environmental habits when they go back to school.

Children voices she reiterated are prophetic voices therefore children should not just wait for such opportunities to do something for the environment but it should be a constant practice since they are like the bearers of the good news of the natural environment, she ended with a note of satisfaction stating that cleanliness is close to Godliness.

The operation was equally characterized by sensitization talks on the importance of having a clean coastal marine eco-system, waste management around the sea, water, sanitation and healthy environment, and other environmentally friendly habits, amongst other things. The activity ended with "a tree plant for climate Justice around the beach" this item marked the end of this summer holiday adventure with environment kids.

It should be noted that LANEC, has been carrying out education and sensitization activities on various environmental issues for the past years. LANEC successfully put across the message to some youths last August 2009, in a similar operation in the South West Region. The present event is in line with a pledge made in 2008, when this group carried out a similar activity in Kribi

The children separated with a clear view of the perculiarities of environmental issues of the south region. Experiences from the 2010 Young Agenda 21, conference recently held in Stavanger, Norway was shared by those who represented the group during this conference, and other presentations on what LANEC has ben able to do for the past three years. The event recorded a good number of beach little like, plastic waste, sardine tins, cigarettes, slippers, leaves, water bottles, whisky sachets, biscuit packets etc, some of these litter was at the end of the activity transformed to beach art with different messages from the children.

Le 17 Juin 2010 a été marqué par les activités relatives à la commémoration de la Journée Mondiale de Lutte Contre la Désertification et la Sécheresse. C’est dire combien de fois le thème « Des millions d’espèces, une planète, un avenir commun » choisi pour cette édition 2010 tombait à point nommé. Le thème sonnait en parfait accord avec l’année internationale de la Diversité Biologique décrétée pour 2010 par la communauté internationale.

La Journée Mondiale de l’Environnement. Celle de 2010 a vocation à être la journée d’action environnementale positive la plus importante et la plus largement célébrée dans le monde. Commémorée tous les 5 juin depuis 1972, cette journée est pour les Nations Unies l’un des principaux moyens pour stimuler la prise de conscience mondiale sur l’environnement et encourager l’intérêt et l’action politique.
